Sigma Notation of a Series

A series can be represented in a compact form, called summation or sigma notation. The Greek uppercase, , is used to represent the sum.

The series

iv + 8 + 12 + 16 + twenty + 24

tin can be expressed as

n = 1 half dozen four n

. The expression is read as the sum of

4 n

as

n

goes from

1

to

vi

. The variable

north

is called the index of summation.

To generate the terms of a series given in sigma notation, successively supplant the alphabetize of summation with consecutive integers from the first value to the terminal value of the index.

To generate the terms of the series given in sigma notation in a higher place, replace north past 1 , ii , iii , four , 5 , and 6 .

n = 1 half-dozen 4 n = 4 1 + four 2 + iv 3 + 4 4 + 4 5 + 4 6 = 4 + eight + 12 + 16 + 20 + 24 = 84

The sum of the series is 84 .
